Jerome Coffern is a white-haired old chemist who was once hailed as one of the most learned industrial scientists in the world. He was the chief chemist of the Mammoth Manufacturing Company and was o valued for his contributions his salery was even greater than the company's president. Coffern was at one time the mentor of Doc Savage however doc quickly learned all the information he had to offer him. At that time Doc presented him with a wrist watch as a token of gratitude and the two have been friends ever since. The last night of his life Coffern planned on having dinner with Doc Savage. However as he was walking to meet him he was brained with an iron pipe. His lifeles body was then shot with a specialized air pisol which enveloped his body in a gray cloud. This rapidly dissolved him and the sidewalk beneath, leaving only his forearm, hand, and watch.
